Fashion: Hat Trick

Whether you’re throwing it into the ring or wearing more than one, designer-to-the-stars and milliner extraordinaire, Louis Mariette, knows which hat fits you best.

Where do you find your inspiration?

I was born in Malawi and spent many years in Botswana and Swaziland, around exotic flora and fauna, which has definitely influenced my designs today. I also travel a lot around the world, constantly collecting things from markets and souks. I have a fascination for tribal people, or people who wear hats that you wouldn’t think have anything to do with fashion, for instance, the police force or the military. One little element of it can actually become an inspiration to a hat. Much of my inspiration has also come out of the wonderful ladies I’ve met in London. I always observe the way they make an entrance to parties and events, how they want to be demure or elegant or outrageous. Each person has a unique personality so the designs are also centred around a character. When a lady comes to me for a bespoke creation or to try on one of the Bejewelled collection, in the short time I get to meet them, I’m really picking up on the personality and what suits them.

Tell us a little about your design process…

I always try to pioneer my craft and experiment with techniques. At the moment we’re working on a ready-to-wear collection, we want very simple in contrast with the more flamboyant, over-the-top couture pieces. I’m going for very strict, clean lines – stylish and practical. I’m in the middle of designing a new turban, which is bringing back from a bygone era into the modern age with a bit of a twist. It’s such a classic, elegant, beautiful piece of headware!

What style advice could you give our readers ?

People often ask me what suits them. For me one of the golden rules is; if you are very short, don’t wear something that’s too wide of brim because you’d look like a mushroom. So wear brims that are within your proportions and your look. Be very honest with yourself.

You’re the Vice President of The Children’s Trust – the chosen charity for the Spirit of Christmas Fair where you will be running a workshop…

They have been great to work with, and it’s been a privilege as well. [At the workshop] I would like to talk about how to carry off a look, give style tips and bring a few ladies out from the audience so they can try on some pieces. I’d really like them to understand everything from wearing make-up to accessorising – how to accessorise is very important.

Louis Mariette will be running a workshop at the Spirit of Christmas Fair at Olympia on Wednesday 3rd November. Louis will also be taking part in the Mad Hatters Show at the Hurlingham Club, in aid of The Children’s Trust, next spring. Children’s Trust’s website: www.thechildrenstrust.org.uk
